Mount Suswa Conservancy is one of our favourite off the beaten track places to head to for an adventure and some bush camping!
Mount Suswa is a shield volcano with a double crater rim, which has a network of lava caves underground, and, as it’s still active, the area emits steam jets from vents in the ground, which the local Masai use for their water supply. It’s possible to hike up to the peak which is 2356m, you can also hike around the entire 22km rim or inside the crater if you wish! Mount Suswa is also great place to get an insight into traditional Masai life without it being too touristy.
Located between Nairobi and Narok, it is unique in that it is entirely managed and conserved by the local Masai community who live within the conservation area. The conservation area is only accessible if you have your own transport, or via motorbike taxis from the local town of Suswa. With no lodges or camps, the only accommodation options are staying in the Masai village homestay, or going fully equipped with all your own camping gear, cooking equipment and food. We usually opt for the latter, and camp on the inner crater rim campsite with stunning views over the crater!
It currently costs US$ 30 per adult and US$ 10 per child per day, non resident rates, to enter the conservancy. There are also additional fees for vehicles, camping and guiding.
